If your Colorado vacation includes a round of golf, swing your way onto the four world-class Grand County Colorado golf courses where the air is thinner (at 8,000 feet above sea level) and your ball and your drives are longer. Grand County might be deep in the heart of ski country, but when the spring thaw begins, this mountain getaway is a perfect golf destination. With a view of the Never Summer Mountain Range, choose from four Grand County golf courses: Headwaters Golf Course, Grand Elk Golf Club, Grand Lake Golf Course, and Pole Creek Golf Club.
Headwaters Golf Course
Located on Highway 40 near Granby, Headwaters Golf Course is tucked into a Rocky Mountain valley with views of the Continental Divide from all 18-holes of the par 72, 7,250 yards. A Michael Asmundson design, the first nine opened in 2011, and the back nine opened in 2003, with extensive renovation by Nicklaus Design. Set in the sage valley at the foot of the ski slopes, the 18-holes weave gently through some wetlands along the Fraser River and holes bordering aspens and pines. The friendly layout of the Headwaters Golf Course is complemented by its practice facilities and two family holes.
Grand Elk Golf Club
Located across Highway 40 from Headwaters, Grand Elk Golf Club opened in 2002, as a par 71, 7,208 yard Craig Stadler-design by Tripp Davis. Grand Elk is a traditional heathland-style course (reminiscent of Scotland’s historic Gleneagles) with gently rolling fairways, mountain valleys, rivers and streams. The challenging Grand Elk Golf Club course includes strategically placed – and often challenging – hazards, is an outdoors getaway for all lovers of the outdoors: golfers, fishermen, skiers and hikers.
Grand Lake Golf Course
Reach new heights at an altitude of 8,420 feet when you swing your club on the 18-hole, 6,570-yard, part 72 Grand Lake Golf Course. Minutes from Grand Lake and known as the “Crown Jewel of Mountain Courses,” Grand Lake’s championship course is a design product of Henry Hughes and Dick Phelps. Originally, the design was cut through 50-foot tall lodgepole pines; unfortunately the forest is a thinning casualty of the pine beetle outbreak. Yet golfers will still be challenged with subtle greens and thick growth lining the fairways.
Pole Creek Golf Club
Pole Creek Golf Club epitomizes the spirit of the Colorado mountain golf experience with its dramatic alpine views of the 13,000-foot Continental Divide and Indian Peaks Wilderness; tree-lined fairways; extreme elevations changes; impressive doglegs; challenging seven lakes and ponds; and energizing mountain air. Located between Granby and Winter Park, this 27-hole masterpiece opened in 1985 to Golf Digest acclaim, as one of the Best New Courses in the U.S. Choose from Pole Creek’s three distinct 9-hole courses: Meadow and Ranch nines (7,107 yards, par 7s designed by Gary Player and Ron Kirby) and The Ridge, added in 1999 by golf designer Dennis Griffiths.
